The year-round, dog-friendly day hike to Fragrance Lake in the Chuckanut Recreation Area is popular with college students and faculty from Western Washington University in nearby Bellingham, and with day visitors and car campers at Larrabee State Park. On a sunny weekend afternoon you could easily lose count of the number of smiles and “hullos” you’ll exchange!

Located off US Highway 30 and now called Tongue Point, the peninsula comprises a US Jobs Corps Campus, US Coast Guard facility, commercial shipping yards, and a component of the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge. Public access is restricted, but the landform is viewable and interpreted from wildlife refuge public areas to the east, and the Astoria Riverwalk to the west. The “Tongue Point” name predated Lewis and Clark, given by British explorer George Vancouver in 1792.

For millennia, the Elwha River ran wild, connecting mountains and seas in a thriving ecosystem. The river proved to be an ideal habitat for anadromous (sea-run) fish, with eleven varieties of salmon and trout spawning in its waters. These fish thrived in the cold, clear waters of the Elwha River and historically served as an important food source for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe living along its banks.

Appreciate nature from three breathtaking perspectives – Capilano Suspension Bridge, Treetops Adventure and the exciting new Cliffwalk. The 450 ft (137m) long, 230 ft (70m) high Capilano Suspension Bridge has thrilled visitors since 1889. While the wobbly bridge and stunning location is a Vancouver landmark, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park offers an all-encompassing BC experience. History, culture and nature are presented in unique and thrilling ways with knowledgeable staff and interpretive signage providing as much, or as little, information as guests want. Cliffwalk follows a granite precipice along Capilano River on a labyrinth-like series of narrow cantilevered bridges, stairs and platforms through rainforest vegetation. With 16 anchor points in the cliff supporting the structure and open grated walkways, Cliffwalk is not for the faint of heart! Interactive exhibits demonstrate the need for water conservation. Treetops Adventure takes guests 110 feet into the mid-story of a coastal rainforest on seven suspension bridges attached to old-growth trees. It is accessible to guests of all ages. Nature talks provided hourly, explains the importance of a West Coast temperate rainforest to the ecosystem. History talks provide guests with an interactive synopsis to our colourful past including the endeavours of past owners, the involvement of local First Nations in our past, and of course information on the world famous Capilano Suspension Bridge. Our nature talk provides guests with an introduction to the ecology of the West Coast rainforest. Guests learn about the flora and fauna found in our ecosystem, as well the climatic characteristics that make the West Coast a unique environment. Shopping, dining and seasonal seasonal events like Raptors Ridge birds of prey June to October and Canyon Lights in December enhance the many experiences at this year-round destination.
