highways are a good example of what Dewey meant by “art as experience”. imagine archaeologists of a future car-free civilization looking at our huge interchange structures and talking about them as “sculptures” that facilitated “complex movement rituals”, or something like that

they wouldn’t necessarily be *wrong*. but their aloof analysis is a much different way of relating to the infrastructure than tfw commuting or road tripping. it’s like what museums do when they put old masks and vessels and statues behind glass

understanding an artwork as experience means remembering how it was fully entangled with the multisensory activities of everyday life. remembering that the detached/static viewing experience of the display case is a long ways away from the OG context
